How to Get to the Best Hunting in Nebraska
Driving Directions
We are located 35 minutes south of the Cozad, Nebraska Interstate 80 Interchange, exit 222. At Cozad turn south on Highway 21 for 14 miles. Then turn west for 2 miles. At Eustis (now just 10 miles to go)
take the first left (south) at the school go five blocks to end of the street (railroad). Turn west 1 block, then turn south at the tall concrete grain elevator. Watch for the sign shown to the left, above the sign for directions to our city park and fairgrounds.
Go ½ mile to the “Y” then veer to the right or west and stay on west canyon road (watch for signs) (do not take "middle canyon" road) for a scenic 10 mile drive. At the 9 mile mark you will go down a large hill where there is a concrete bridge. (watch out for turkeys or deer crossing in this area) Past this bridge and
immediately on top of this hill is where you need to turn to the right or west
on road 741 (watch for the Great Nebraska Hunting sign shown to the left). This curves immediately to the north and then west. Then take the first turn to the right or north. Watch for the two tall blue silos. The west canyon road does have several hills and curves but as long as you do not turn off until past the bridge you will be fine. Please be cautious while driving on non-paved roads.
History of our Farm
Our location, until the early 1900s, was just over a mile from what used to be Hunt, Nebraska. In fact, the old Hunt school was located on what is now our property. Does make one curious about how the name Hunt was chosen. I like to believe it was named for the great hunting our area has to offer. When our ancestors settled here, they lived off this land, just as the many Native Americans did before them. One can still find a few buffalo wallows on our property and every now and then, an arrow head.
The Scenic Route
For a more scenic drive through the hills, you may consider going south of Gothenburg on highway 47 (exit 211) then take highway 23 east to Eustis. You may also wish to take exit 237 at Lexington, than south on highway 283 to Elwood than head west (more beautiful hill country) to Eustis on highway 23.
