Nebraska Mule DeerNebraska Deer Hunting - Mule and Whitetail Deer

The Frenchman Unit fills firearm permits around September 1st.  Whitetail only firearm have not been selling out. Season choice area 8 antlerlesss only usually fills in December. For details, check out http://www.ngpc.state.ne.us/hunting/guides/biggame/BGpermstatus.asp

Deer hunters in Nebraska can have a maximum of two either-sex deer permits and any number of antlerless permits.

We limit the number of persons harvesting deer to no more than eight.  Additional persons may be taken for the antlerless season.

(2007) Kit Hams, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s big game program manager, said, “We expect to have a record deer population this fall and we encourage hunters to take advantage of the liberal antlerless seasons in most areas of the state and harvest does.”

Here are some examples of the deer that roam our area.  Whitetail to the right and a Mule below.  Below right is another example of the Mule deer on our properties. Typically there is a larger buck or two out there.  We finished the 2007 rifle season with a Mule escaping that is larger than either of the ones shown below. Four deer 5 by 5 or larger were taken within one mile or less or our headquarters.

For the year 2006 in Frontier county, where we are located, was the #1 county in the state for harvesting mule bucks based on density per square mile.  Also for the year 2006, 58% of bucks harvested in our Frenchman area were 2 and1/2 years old or older. The Frenchman area averages about a 62% rate for the rifle season. Here at Great Nebraska Hunting, we have a success rate higher than our area average and this takes in account an average three day hunt versus the entire nine day season.

Permits are limited.  Contact Nebr. Game & Parks at: http://www.outdoornebraska.org

Nebraska Deer Hunting Details

We are fortunate in that we have both whitetail and mule deer roaming our land.  Whichever you choose, you will enjoy the challenge.  We are located in the Frenchman management unit and we are also in the season choice area 8.  Our valleys and draws surrounded by our farmland and rangeland enhance the opportunity for a satisfactory hunt.  We will have blinds, upon request, placed in advance of your arrival so the wildlife can adapt to their new surroundings.  Usage of blinds are included in the price of a hunt.  We also have a cart available to assist you in retrieving your deer if it happens to go down in a remote or limited assessable area. You are welcome to use our amenities that are available for upland game hunting.

Our area (Frenchman) is near the top in the state for the rate of successful rifle harvests.  Success rates are typically around 60% for our season area.  On our properties, in recent years, we  have had  higher than average success rates. Archery and muzzleloader successes are more average.

Because our habitat contains field crops such as corn, milo, wheat, soybeans etc, deer in this area typically grow larger than in many other areas, such as the southern states and have a higher quality tasting meat also due to their diet containing grains etc.  This diet aids in the potential for their size and quality of antlers.

Several nice bucks are taken in our area during the firearm season.  We invite you to visit Stuff N Critters Taxidermy owned by Ray Westphal and located in nearby Farnam.  Go to www.stuffncritterstaxidermy.com and click on the Trophy Photos link for a sampling of the local successes.  Several nice bucks are in the making for the 2008 season.  We have seen both mule and whitetails that are well on their way towards possessing nice racks by next fall.
