Turkey Information
The species of turkey in our area are mixes or hybrids of the Rio Grande and Merriam species. This is unique to our area as a very small region in the United States inhabits these hybrids. The spring hatch was good once again. Turkeys, in the spring, on our properties, number at least 400. They will begin moving into smaller flocks in February. Warmer weather influences the flocks to begin expanding their territories. Usually in April , the territories expand farther and turkeys can be found most anywhere, including our yard and very near our homes. Movement in the fall pushes some of the turkeys south off our properties but numbers are still good for a great hunt.
You will enjoy hunting our areas containing high populations of turkey. We are fortunate to be in an area that has some of the highest populations in Nebraska. It is common to see them in numbers of 50+ until later during the nesting period. Late season Toms will number from individuals up to a flock of about 10. Males with 8-9 inch beards are also common. On May 19, 2005 a tom was taken with a 10.5 inch beard and another on this same date had spurs measuring 1.25 inches. Toms easily weigh into the 20s. 23-27 lb. birds are common. See photos in the wildlife gallery.
You are welcome to use our amenities that are available for upland game hunting.
